Student Transfer Information

Student Transfer Requests

NOTE: Information regarding student transfer requests for the 2019-20 school year
will be posted in February 2019.

In Leander ISD, we believe students receive a quality education regardless of the campus they attend; however, we understand there are circumstances when a student may desire to attend a school other than the campus they are currently assigned. Please review the following information regarding the 2018-2019 transfer application process.

In-District Transfer Requests

Voluntary Parent Choice Transfers:
This type of transfer is for students who live within the boundaries of Leander ISD, but request a transfer to a school not assigned to the student’s place of residence.
  • All voluntary parent choice student transfer applications are assessed a $30.00 processing fee which must be paid prior to the review of the transfer application.
    • Students participating in the federal free lunch program are not assessed a processing fee.
    • Students participating in the federal reduced-price lunch program are assessed a $10 processing fee.
  • The fee is non-refundable and does not guarantee the transfer request will be approved.

Program Transfer Requests:
This type of transfer is a request to attend a school with a specific program offered at the transfer campus which is not available at the student’s zoned home campus. All program transfers must be approved by the appropriate department and campus.
  • The only program currently open to transfer requests is the IB Programme at Leander HS and Vandegrift HS.
    • Cedar Park HS students may request a transfer to either Leander HS or Vandegrift HS for the IB Programme.
    • Glenn HS, Rouse HS and Vista Ridge HS students may request a transfer to Leander HS for the IB Programme.
  • The processing fee of $30.00 does not apply when the program is not offered at the student’s home campus.

New Students to LISD desiring a transfer:
Students new to Leander ISD in the 2018-2019 school year should first register at their assigned home campus. A transfer request may be submitted once registration at the assigned home campus is complete.

PEG Transfer Requests:
Parents of students currently attending, or zoned to, a Public Education Grant (PEG) campus may request a transfer to another campus within Leander ISD. Transfer requests will follow the current district policy and requests may not be approved to a closed campus due to space and staffing availability. Please consult the list of open and closed campuses on this site, which is subject to change. Parents requesting a transfer to another campus within the district are responsible for providing transportation to/from the requested campus if the transfer is approved.

*** The $30 transfer application fee does not apply for any students currently attending or zoned to the PEG campus. The only PEG campus currently identified within Leander ISD is Bagdad Elementary.

Out-of-District Transfers

Leander ISD does not accept out-of-district transfer requests pursuant to Board Policy FDA(local), except in the following cases:
  • The student is a child of a current Leander ISD employee. (Campus assignment will depend on space and staffing availability.)
  • Students moving into the district within 60 days with proof of residency and move-in date provided.
  • Resident students who move out of the district during the school year may continue until the end of the current semester only.

Transfer Application

Transfer applications for 1st through 12th grade students during the 2018-2019 school year:
  • Application may be submitted between February 19, 2018 and March 19, 2018. (Please complete an online application, if possible. Paper transfer forms will be available at the campus, if needed.)
  • Parents will be notified whether the request was accepted or denied by April 20, 2018.

  • *** Applications received after March 19, 2018 and before June 21, 2018 will not be reviewed until late summer.

Transfer applications for kindergarten students during the 2018-2019 school year:
  • Applications will be accepted upon the completion of kindergarten registration. Dates for kindergarten registration will be publicized on the district website.

Please submit all transfer requests online, if possible. The online form became available Feb. 19, 2018 and closed June 21, 2018.
Paper forms are accessible at your child’s campus, if needed. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

Students requesting a transfer, for the programs listed below, should contact the campus registrar at the student’s home campus who will process the transfer application.

  • PSLP — Preschool Speech & Language Program
  • ELL — English Language Learners
  • ELE/SLE — Early Learning Environment/Structured Learning Environment
  • LEIP — Language Enrichment Intervention Program
  • Out-of-district pending residency
  • Out-of-district employee new to Leander ISD

Upon receipt of the application and processing fee, the transfer application will be reviewed dependent on time of year, as well as the priority of transfer. Transfer priority levels are listed below:

  • Program transfers (High School IB only — Leander HS and Vandegrift HS)
  • Existing transfer students at the campus requested
  • Incoming siblings of existing transfer students
  • Students of LISD employees who work at the requested campus
  • Students of LISD employees who do not work at the requested campus

Elementary and Middle School Transfers
  • A transfer request must be submitted annually.
  • Student transfers may be revoked for lack of academic progress, lack of attendance, and/or misconduct.

High School Transfers
  • All approved high school transfers remain in effect for the duration of a student’s high school career.
  • Student transfers may be revoked for lack of academic progress, lack of attendance, misconduct or because the student is no longer participating in an eligible program for which the student initially transferred.

UIL Eligibility:
Students transferring between high schools within Leander ISD will lose one calendar year of eligibility for sub-varsity and varsity athletics, meaning student athletes not attending their zoned high school must “sit out” of sports for one calendar year to establish eligibility. At this time, transferring students involved in all other UIL activities will be eligible immediately.

*** There are extremely limited exceptions to this policy. To read them, please refer to the LISD Athletics UIL page or call the LISD Athletic Department with any questions at 512-570-0170.

Schools Accepting Transfer Requests for the 2018-2019 School Year

  • Due to the rapid growth in Leander ISD, space and staffing availability was evaluated in each grade level/program and no transfer requests submitted after June 21, 2018 will be approved based on this evaluation.
  • With the exception of high school transfers, there is NO guarantee that children who transfer in will be able to continue at the requested campus in future school years. Transfer requests must be submitted annually.
  • If a transfer application is submitted for a closed campus, the processing fee is NOT refundable.
Please review the list below of closed and open campuses for the 2018-2019 school year. This list is subject to change and will be updated on this site.

Campuses NOT accepting student transfer requests for the 2018-19 school year

Leander ISD works hard to accommodate transfer requests throughout the district. After careful review and processing of our transfer requests in the spring, all campuses are now closed to incoming student transfer requests. If you have a question regarding a student transfer request, please contact your campus registrar or submit your question here.

For information regarding admissions, student transfers, and transfer appeals, please refer to policies FD(legal), FD(local), FDA(legal), FDA(local), GF(local) in the Leander ISD Board Policy Manual.
