SuperintendentDan Troxell, Ph.D.

Dan Troxell, Ph.D., is in his second year as the Leander ISD superintendent. Before coming to LISD, Troxell served as superintendent of Kerrville ISD for 13 years.

Prior to his tenure in KISD, Troxell served as an assistant superintendent in the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. He earned a Bachelor's of Arts with honors, and subsequently a Ph.D., from the University of Texas at Austin. Additionally, Troxell earned a master's degree in education from Texas State University in San Marcos. He began his career in education as a middle school teacher, later serving as a middle and high school assistant principal, and as a high school principal in both Allen and Cypress-Fairbanks ISDs.

Troxell was named the 2008 Texas Association of School Boards Superintendent of the Year. He was also named the 2006 Region 20 Advocate of the Gifted, and in 1997, he was named the Dallas Morning News reader-selected Best Principal. During his career, he has taught courses in school finance as an adjunct professor and as a part-time professor at Schreiner University, Sam Houston State University and the University of Houston.

Troxell serves on the UIL Legislative Council, where he chairs the standing committee on Academics; and the Texas Association of School Boards Risk Management Fund Board.

Troxell and his wife, Shelley, have two college-aged sons.

A school district’s finances are always a topic of interest. Just like most families we serve, Leander ISD has a budget and debt to repay. That is just how public education works in Texas: the state sets the school finance formulas which are used to operate LISD and voters authorize us to take on and repay debt (in the form of bonds) to construct and maintain buildings according to the district’s needs.

Reading: The most important of “The Three Rs”

Any educator – and plenty of academic studies – will tell you that reading is fundamental to a child’s success in school. Reading is the key to the kingdom, because for many kids it unlocks the possibilities of their future. We know that reading not only introduces literature and history to students, it also aids in problem solving in math and science.
